Helping to build your self worth when you may not see it

The Emotion Wheel

January 24, 2024

Emotions are an integral part of our lives. They are the essence of our existence, molding our thoughts, actions, and reactions. They are the driving force behind our motivations and desires. But how often do we take the time to understand and recognize our emotions? The concept of an ‘Emotion Wheel’ can be a useful tool for this purpose.

Our emotions can range from extreme joy to deep sorrow, from intense anger to profound peace. They can bring about feelings of calmness or trigger frustration and chaos. It’s essential to identify these feelings and emotions as they arise, to understand their root cause and how they affect us. This is where the ‘Emotion Wheel’ comes in, as a tool to recognize and understand our emotions better.

Begin by identifying what you’re feeling. Is it a sense of peace and calmness, or is it triggering frustration and chaos within you? Take a moment to connect with your inner self and truly understand what you’re feeling. Don’t rush this process. Take your time.

Once you’ve identified the emotion, write it down. This might seem like a simple step, but it’s a powerful one. Writing our emotions down allows us to acknowledge them openly, which can be an empowering experience. It’s a way of validating our feelings and giving them the importance they deserve.

Now, articulate your emotions out loud. Speaking your feelings out loud can make them feel more real. It can help you acknowledge them on a deeper level. Sometimes, we might be feeling something strongly but not fully understand why until we express it out loud. It’s also a way of accepting our emotions without judgment.

Next, trace the emotion back to where it started. Try to understand what triggered it. Was it a particular event, person, or memory? Understanding the root cause of our emotions can offer us a deeper insight into ourselves and our emotional patterns.

Finally, ask yourself, “Is this something I can change for myself? Can I control it?” Not all emotions are within our control, and that’s okay. But recognizing what we can change and what we can’t is a critical step towards emotional self-awareness and growth.

Emotion recognition and understanding is not a one-time process. It’s a journey of self-discovery and personal growth that we embark upon throughout our lives. It’s about learning to navigate our emotional landscape and create a healthier relationship with our feelings. And the ‘Emotion Wheel’ can be a valuable ally in this journey.

So, the next time you find yourself overwhelmed by your emotions, remember the ‘Emotion Wheel’. Identify your feelings, write them down, articulate them out loud, trace them back to their origin, and ask yourself what you can change. It’s a journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and growth. And remember, you’re not alone in this journey. We’re all learning, growing, and evolving, one emotion at a time.

Remember, “Emotions, once felt, can be a guide towards understanding ourselves better”.
